Second Time (Somewhat) Lucky

The requisite number of days have passed so we (rather fearfully, I might add) went to check on the re-applied flooring. Not too bad this time round. It was a marked improvement over the first attempt.

An even, flat grey with no obviously visible seams or bumps. Colour is about right, level of non-glossiness is correct, and if you don’t bring your eyes down to floor level, everything looks A-Ok.

Of course, if we want to be fussy it’s still not as smooth as we would want it to be, and in our defense, we have really seen it being pulled off, so it’s not as though we have unrealistic expectations.

The main problem is that roller brush marks can be seen at certain angles. I’m not sure if these will wear down after some daily wear and tear, but its not obvious enough to warrant a third attempt at doing the flooring. We’ll probably ask for some compensation instead.

Waited 11 days. Unlocked the gate. Opened the main door. Face fell.

The floor looks bad. A lot worse than in the pictures. The colour of the epoxy is right, but once it’s on, it only serves to highlight how unprepped the floor was prior to application.

Conduits cut into the floor for electrical cables can be clearly seen, and where the new cement meets the old, there is an obviously raised seam.

The kitchen flooring is the worst. Seems like the epoxy did not dry properly. There are sore-like bumps all over, and some spots don’t even seem to have adhered to the cement.

The entire kitchen, and half the living room is flat grey, while the bedroom and the rest of the house has a gloss coat. Contractor claims this was not intentional, and that the epoxy dried out this way.

Me? I don’t buy that. I think her workers knew the kitchen flooring was going to turn out bad, so they didn’t add the finishing top coat.

As painful as it is to accept even more delays after a 3 week hiatus, we’re most definitely going to have to redo the flooring. You can already see the yellow post it notes we’ve peppered the floor with, to highlight problem areas.

Stay tuned…

Shades Of Grey

It seems colours go by fancy names these days. Our walls are “snowfield’, our acrylic counter top “fog”, and our laminates “platinum”. And these are all grey, mind you.

So when the contractor asked what colour the cement flooring was going to be painted, our answer…grey like shopping centre carpark lor…

The flooring was a three day process. One day to prep, one day to prime, and one day to apply the actual epoxy.

The lighter coloured flooring seems to brighten up the whole place.

And now the main door is shut, and we have been given strict instructions not to step in for at least five days, to let the epoxy dry in peace.

It’s going to be pure torture, we’re itching to get a good look at whether the floor and wall colours match.
